Parveen Zulfikar was born into poverty but aspired to change her life. She convinced her reluctant father to let her join the APWA Dastkari School in 1999 where she learned cutting and stitching. Her dexterity and expertise helped her earn a steady income. She continues to work after her marriage and is able to help her husband ensure that her children get the opportunities for education that she never did.
Fahim Tajamul studied at the APWA primary school till grade 5, after which he joined the Islamia Government School. He graduated from Dyal Singh College, and now works for the Punjab Police, after realizing his dream to serve the people of Pakistan. He supports and believes in APWA, as he too considers that lack of resources shouldn’t get in the way of the education and dreams of millions of children.
Shakira Javed was widowed and the entire burden of running a household fell on her shoulders, however, due to lack of education and training, she couldn’t work. She was guided to join APWA Daskari Center from where she learned to stitch. After completing her training she works as a lady tailor, and is able to fulfill her financial duties. She believes APWA to be her miracle and wants other women rise above their obstacles.
APWA’s vision is to eliminate all forms of discrimination against women and children especially the girl child in Pakistan. APWA Punjab is continuously striving for the holistic empowerment of this marginalized sector of Punjab. The population of Punjab is two thirds of Pakistan as such APWA Punjab has a momentous task to achieve the maximum rights of women from all social strata. APWA works to empower women through education, skill development, and legal awareness, whilst providing them with essential healthcare services.
